From the moment I arrived at The Cheney Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I knew Katelynn and Luke’s wedding day was going to be something special. This unique venue is one of my favorite places to photograph weddings in West Michigan. The venue’s eclectic design created the perfect backdrop for a day full of love, laughter, and excitement. If you have never been to The Cheney Place, it is a huge warehouse-style building filled with just about every mid-century modern piece of furniture you could imagine. Every corner of the venue offers something interesting, which makes it such a fun place for wedding photos.
The Day!
The morning started with both the bride and groom getting ready at the venue. One of my favorite moments was when they opened the gifts they had for each other. Watching their reactions to the handwritten letters and thoughtful gifts was so much fun.
Before the ceremony, Katelynn and Luke shared a private first look away from the rest of their guests. During that time, they also exchanged personal vows. It was such a special moment to capture. I’m pretty sure there were tears from both of them at some point.
Katelynn and Luke really wanted their ceremony to feel personal. Katelynn made a grand entrance by arriving through the venue’s elevator. The couple also shared a PB&J sandwich as a symbol of their unity. It was a unique and meaningful touch. I loved how intentional they were about making the ceremony their own.
As the evening began, guests gathered for the reception. The space was decorated in beautiful forest green and gold. The cake table lined the back wall and was filled with so many delicious treats. The wooden head table sat in the center of the room and looked incredible.
The night was full of amazing moments. There were heartfelt speeches, a packed dance floor, and plenty of hugs and happy tears. One highlight of the evening was when the wedding party started dancing to songs that were all inside jokes between them. It was such a fun moment to watch.
Parting Thoughts
Being part of Katelynn and Luke’s wedding day was truly an honor. They created a day that reflected who they are as a couple—relaxed, joyful, and focused on celebrating with the people they love most. These are the kinds of weddings I love photographing, because the moments are real and the emotions are genuine.
If you are planning a wedding at The Cheney Place or anywhere in West Michigan and are looking for a Grand Rapids wedding photographer, I would love to connect and hear about your plans.
